Ch. 26 poem – Bilingual/Bilingue by Rhina Espaillat

September 16, 2009 jsalas3240

This poem speaks a lot to people who come from a family whose first language is not English. It can be hard on a mother and father who do not understand the language and who wish to keep English out of the house to not only better understand more of what their children are saying but also as to keep their children from forgetting their language and not losing some of their heritage that is important. But she would proudly show her English off and her good writing ability and she know that her father secretly loved the English language and was proud of her for knowing how to use the language on paper.

I liked this poem too. Mainly because i can relate to it more than any other poem… speaking two languages is hard sometimes, imagine speaking 4 or more.

I honestly like this poem alot because it reminds me of my own family. My mom doesn’t speak English and she does not like it when my sister, my brother, and I speak English with each other at home. I think the main reason she does not like for us to speak
English at home is because she fears that we forget our own heritage. I can really relate to this poem.
