End of Semester

We turned in our research papers and now we are studying for the final exam. I am so glad the final exam is only going to cover the fiction part of the course and that it is not  comprehensive. If the final exam is just like the other exams we have taken in the past, then I’m confident that I can made a good grade. I have enjoyed being in English this semester.  And I’m relived that it is my last english class ever! Even though I enjoy english a lot. The blogs were fun to try to keep up with. I would say the section I enjoyed working on was drama. But I also enjoyed the class overall :)

Research paper

I actually ended up changing the story I am doing my research paper on. I’m doing “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. At the beginning it was either between Jackson’s story or Atwood’s story. I wanted to  do “Happy Endings” because  I enjoyed it a lot, but to be honest, there seemed to not be a lot of research to look up for her  story. As I’m researching “The Lottery” I am finding it to be easier and there seems to be much more information out there for the story. Working on the paper is time consuming, but it has to be done.

Happy Endings

I’m writing my research paper on “Happy Endings” by Margaret Atwood. I love her story and how she wrote about relationships like that. She gives the readers a choice to pick out their own ending and all of the endings are in some way, a little bit crazy. And scenarios like that really do happen. Where people fall crazy in love and do the craziest things because of being heartbroken. So this classes research paper should be challenging but fun at the same time for me, I have a lot to do in  week.

Fiction

Now that we are reading fiction, it is becoming easier for me :) Poetry was kinda hard, drama was fun and now fiction should be fun as well because it’s they are stories that aren’t real but they are very thought provoking and get you to think about the authors main idea for writing a story with different characters is. Also, I can’t wait to get back our drama essays!

“And they danced real slow in Jackson” by Jim Leonard

I went to go see the theater production of “And they danced real slow in Jackson” at San Jac South performed by Lone Star community college students. San Jac hosted a theater festival event where different colleges came to put on plays and I happen to see the above play. So I’m going to get down and start writing the review and finish up the drama compare and contrast paper that is due tomorrow morning. Good luck everyone with your papers. :)

Seeing a theatre production

I can’t wait to see a play at a theatre! I think it’s exciting but that’s just me. I’m currently taking theatre as a class and we are required to see two plays and write a critique on them. And now since we can do this for extra credit in English class, it makes it more enjoyable for me. I don’t know which one to see yet but the college is hosting a theatre festival this week where there is colleges from around Texas who are coming to perform their acts on stage and it’s cheap to get into if you are a student. Everyone should definitely go see a play :)

Othello

Reading the play was difficult but the footnotes at the bottom of the page were very helpful along with the extra help that was posted on Textplorations for us. And the movie was extremely helpful in understanding the play! Iago really made me mad though, how could someone be so decitful like that?  To me that is just plain evil and he needs to get what he deserves. I also thought that Othello sound of taken the time to listen to Desdemona and he should have not believed everything that came out of Iago’s mouth. It was a good play, I enjoy reading Shakespeare even if it’s a hard to understand.

Drama Exam

We took the drama exam on Monday and I think I did well. The essay part of it was fairly essay to me because it had to do with “The Glass Menagerie” and the theme and symbol of that play is something that really interests me. Especially on how the playwright used the title to symbolize the characters in her play. The terms were a little tricky but not too bad. I think overall I did really well on the drama exam.

Biggest challenges

My biggest challenges on the poetry essay was just trying to identify how the theme related to a certain element. The poem I was writing the essay on was “Theme for English B” and I found it to be extremely difficult to relate the theme to what I chose as the poetic devices in the poem. I chose form as the poetic device for the essay and it was hard to compare it to the the theme. to  I also did the page in a rush and I feel that I could of done a whole lot better than the grade I received. I was really disappointed but I think the paper was a really hard assignment.

Ch. 26 poem – Bilingual/Bilingue by Rhina Espaillat

This poem speaks a lot to people who come from a family whose first language is not English. It can be hard on a mother and father who do not understand the language and who wish to keep English out of the house to not only better understand more of what their children are saying but also as to keep their children from forgetting their language and not losing some of their heritage that is important. But she would proudly show her English off and her good writing ability and she know that her father secretly loved the English language and was proud of her for knowing how to use the language on paper.
